5 Habits to Protect Your Curly Hair in Winter

Too much advice about curly hair can quickly become confusing. In this article, we share 5 essential no-gos to help simplify your routine and take better care of your curls.

When you see the sheer number of posts and articles online about curly hair, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Between sometimes contradictory advice and overly complicated routines, it’s enough to make you feel lost — or even want to give up altogether.

To help you avoid information overload, here are 5 essential no-gos for curly hair. These simple guidelines will help you care for your hair while you take the time to discover the routines and habits that truly work for you.

1. Choosing the right products and techniques

Using products that are not suited to your hair structure or porosity can weaken your hair in the long term. If you’re unsure how to choose the right products, opt for formulas made with natural ingredients and free from sulphates, parabens and silicones.

Curl-definition techniques can be real allies, especially in winter. They help reduce excessive manipulation, as touching your hair daily can damage the hair fibre. Between cold weather and humidity, curly hair is already exposed to enough external stress.

Heat styling tools: enemies of our curls?

Flat irons, hot-air hair dryers… frequent and prolonged use of heat weakens, dehydrates and damages the hair. And damaged hair means dull, lifeless curls with less bounce.

Important: this doesn’t mean you should completely stop straightening your hair! The key is to protect your hair from heat using heat-protectant products and to limit how often you do it.

At Sanganni, we don’t believe in rigid hair rules, but in a kind and balanced approach: learning to love your hair in its natural state, while still allowing yourself the occasional hair experiment.

Inès’ note:“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to straighten your hair from time to time, just for the pleasure of changing your look. Once a year, I go through a straight-hair phase for one to two weeks. I prepare my hair with a heat-protectant product, and afterwards I follow up with a nourishing and detox treatment to maintain my curls.”

2. Not spacing out your washes

Between exercise, sweating, headwear and city life, we often feel the need to wash our hair (too) frequently — both to feel clean and to revive “fresh” curls. However, washing your hair too often irritates the scalp and weakens the lengths.

At Sanganni, we recommend shampooing no more than once or twice a week to maintain scalp balance and protect the health of the hair fibre.

If you suffer from a dermatological condition, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional to adapt your hair routine.

Extra wash needed?

If an additional wash is necessary — after sport or swimming, for example — opt for gentler alternatives:

  • a co-wash (washing with conditioner, mainly applied to the lengths),
  • or a no-poo routine (cleansing powder or dry shampoo).

These options refresh the hair without causing damage.

3. Using the wrong towel to dry curly hair

Classic terry towels are not suitable for curly hair: they absorb too much water, dry out the hair fibre and encourage breakage and frizz.

Instead, choose a microfibre towel, bamboo fibre towel, or simply a cotton T-shirt (easy to find in your wardrobe). These alternatives are much gentler on the hair and reduce friction.

Combined with the plopping method, this technique helps retain moisture while allowing curls to keep their natural shape and definition.

4. Protective styles: your best ally

Protective hairstyles (simple braids, box braids, twist-outs…) help shield your hair from external aggressors such as wind, pollution, friction from clothing or pillowcases. They also help preserve curl shape and definition, especially overnight.

Sanganni tip: “Tying your hair in a ‘pineapple’ at night helps keep curls intact for longer. Just make sure to always use a satin scrunchie.”

5. Hair detox: a true reset for your curls

If there were 10 commandments for curly hair, hair detox — also known as clarifying — would definitely be at the top of the list. This treatment purifies the hair fibre and deeply cleanses both the lengths and the scalp.

Clarifying helps remove product build-up, pollution and limescale residue, soothes the scalp and restores lightness and bounce to the curls.

When should you do it?

When your hair feels dull to the touch, heavy or saturated with products, it’s a sign that it’s time to add a hair detox to your routine.
The result: curls that are lighter, better defined and ready to start fresh.

Taking care of curly hair isn’t about following rules to the letter — it’s about learning to listen to your hair, respect its needs and gradually build a routine that truly suits you.
